What should I wear?
Bring plenty of options to the shoot; we'll go over them beforehand, but here are some pointers:
- Stay away from clothes with busy patterns. Solid colors are best. No logos.
- Solid colors are better for headshots than busy patterns
- Tops can be any color but remember that very bright colors can draw attention away from your face, so choose something a little more subdued. Some clothing colors are so vibrant that a camera has difficulty reproducing them. They can appear very different in the final image.
- Your lower half will likely not be included in the photograph during a headshot session, so ensure that your bottoms are clean, pressed, and match your tops. You never know what we might learn from your session. If you're wearing a suit, bring matching pants.
- Undergarments. Make sure you bring the appropriate undergarments for the tops you get. You might be disappointed if you bring that super cute tank top or strapless dress, but remember to bring a strapless bra.
- If you're shooting in multiple outfits, bring an undershirt or camisole. It saves time to change tops in the studio for different headshot looks. Also, wear an undershirt with a v-neck, as it will show up less in photos.
Clothing guide for team headshots?
What I should wear for my headshot session is an interesting question because there are several variables to consider. First, are you attempting to align with a specific brand? Most of our clients assign a dress code and color palette for team headshots. For instance, business attire in black is the primary color. The way you dress is entirely up to you, but here are some general guidelines:
- All clothes should be clean and pressed.
- Again, solid colors are better for headshots than busy patterns
- Very bright colors can often distract from a remarkable expression in a headshot.
- Consider your brand. Are you more polished and formal? Are you more laid-back? Dress and accessorize in a way consistent with your brand message.
- Encourage your team to wear clothes they know and feel good in. Buying new clothes for the session can lead to uncertainty after the fact. It's often best to wear those tried and true outfits.
Do I need hair & makeup?
It is always advisable to work with a professional hair and makeup artist. Full hair and makeup are sometimes impossible to achieve due to the large number of people photographed in a session. We can, however, arrange for a makeup artist to be present for large group headshots. It truly helps everyone look their best. In addition, we have a professional makeup artist on hand for smaller teams who will arrive before the shoot and ensure that everyone looks great.
If you choose to have your headshots taken without a hair and makeup artist, no worries; here are some pointers to ensure that everyone is camera-ready.
- Avoid using any sunscreen-containing makeup (SPF). These ingredients reflect specific types of light, which makes your skin appear shinier on camera, resulting in uneven skin tones.
- For those who do not wear makeup, we have a shine-reducing powder that we can apply on-site.
- Take it easy with the blush. This area stands out the most in photos and can be hard to correct when post-processing.
- Inform your team members that they should bring a portable makeup kit to the session if they need to reapply their makeup before shooting.
What else can I do to prepare?
Being prepared is essential for ensuring that your headshots go smoothly. So we've put together some resources for your you and some pointers to help things run smoothly.
- Avoid alcohol and get a good night's sleep before the session. Alcohol and lack of sleep can make your face puffy, cause red eyes, and exaggerate under-eye darkness.
- If you intend to get your hair cut or colored, do so at least a week before your appointment. Please don't make any drastic changes to your hair before the shoot. Hair regret is most likely the first reason people are unhappy with their appearance.
- Take care of your skin by drinking a lot of water, using a facial wash, and applying a lotion designed specifically for your face's skin. You'll be surprised how much of a difference it can make in your complexion. If you want to step up your headshot game, we recommend getting a professional facial, but don't do it the day before. It is best to start about a week in advance.
